The Center for Global Partnership

The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP) strives to deepen intellectual exchange between the United States and Japan on issues of common concern through policy-oriented research and dialogue projects. CGP is pleased to announce a Book Project grant competition for Assistant or Associate Professor authorship of a single-authored or limited co-authored book analyzing contemporary social issues.

CGP will provide grants of up to $50,000 * each, paid to and administered through the submitting researcher’s US institution. These grants are intended to buy-out teaching and administrative time in order to provide the author an opportunity to complete the writing phase of a book manuscript.

CGP seeks any policy-relevant topic of interest to both Japan and the United States that focuses on global economic relations, global security, sustainable development, civil society, or health care and aging. Please visit our website for examples of past book project grants.

Proposals must be received by CGP no later than Friday, December 1^st, 2006. Applicants will be notified of the decisions by the end of March, 2007.

Below, you will find the eligibility and evaluation criteria as well as the application procedures for this Book Project grant. We strongly encourage all prospective applicants to contact CGP’s Intellectual Exchange staff to discuss potential topics, the application process, and other issues.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicant(s) should be in the final stages of research and prepared to start the writing phase of the project.

Applicant(s) must have a prior publishing record. This must be clearly demonstrated in the curriculum vitae.

Evaluation Criteria

Publication is single- or co-authored.

Publication focuses on contemporary social issues.

Topic has strong policy-relevance to the United States and Japan, and possibly a third country or region.

Advisory group involvement: a minimum of three individuals, with at least one US participant and one Japanese participant.

Advisory group must be actively engaged in the writing process and meet a minimum of once during the grant period; preferably at the beginning of the process and highly recommended at the final stage of the writing process as well.

Manuscript drafts will be required as a component of the Final Report for all funded projects.

Application Procedures

Interested individuals should apply through an affiliated US nonprofit 501(c)3 institution, as funding will be provided to and administered through the applying institution.

Proposals must be received by CGP no later than Friday, December 1^st, 2006.

Six (6) copies of the research proposal must be submitted to CGP.

Each research proposal should include a Grant Application Cover Sheet as well as the following information:

§ Executive summary

§ Statement of issue

§ Literature review

§ Methodology and conceptual framework

§ Publication outline with a brief synopsis of each chapter

§ Project activities

§ Curriculum Vitae of the author(s) with a full list of past publications

§ Advisory group members’ provisional list and their curriculum vitae

§ Dissemination plan

§ Letter of interest from a publishing company, if applicable (preferred)

§ Detailed budget

§ Institutional background information

§ Proof of 501(c) 3 tax exempt status
